"Indian-Influenced Woodsmen of the Frontier"

The historical record is replete with whites and mixed bloods who "went Native." Many such men and women suffered because of it; a few prospered because of it; most existed somewhere in between. But true "Indian Influenced" types that many deemed "White Savages" were a tiny, but diverse minority, often playing pivotal roles on the frontier.

What might inspire a re-enactor to portray an "Indian esque" person of the frontier? Romance, it looks good, it's practical, within certain limits and allows one to mix and match dress, arms, accouterments and offers the possibility of diversity and establishing unique identity; not the "cookie cutter" look. Truly, a mix of Indian/Anglo dress, food, arms and accouterments represents the best of both worlds for woods wear. How far a re-enactor wants to go is up to the individual. Further, the degree of "Nativeness" and types of dress depend upon one's persona.

Ted Franklin Belue will discuss this and more, including his ideas on clothing, weaponry, skills, flora and fauna, authenticity, research, tattooing, breaking stereotypes, choices of personae and other customs of the day.
